Pick the Gloves Up, Put the Knives Down: How Kickboxing Can Fight Knife Crime

It's Knife Crime Awareness Week, a week which runs from 19 – 25 May - this is an annual campaign by The Ben Kinsella Trust that aims to raise awareness of knife crime's devastating effects and promote preventative solutions.

Knife crime continues to plague communities, leaving families shattered and futures destroyed. But behind every knife is often a deeper story: fear, lack of direction, or a desperate need to feel powerful in a world that feels out of control. At Fight Station Kickboxing, we believe there's a better way. Through discipline, structure, and community, we offer an alternative path — one that leads away from violence and toward real confidence, self-respect, and purpose.

The Root of the Problem - Young people don't carry knives because they want to hurt others; they often carry them because they feel vulnerable, pressured, or invisible. With the rise of online bravado and real-world pressure, it's easy for someone to think violence is their only option to be respected or safe. What they need is a safe space to channel that energy into something positive.

Why Kickboxing Works - Kickboxing teaches more than self-defence — it teaches self-control. At Fight Station, students learn (Please remember - self-defence against knives rarely works and if it does you will likely still get injured - avoidance is the best option!):

  • Respect and Discipline: Every class starts and ends with respect, fostering a culture of honour over hostility.

  • Confidence Without Violence: When you know how to protect yourself, you no longer need to prove yourself.

  • Community Over Isolation: Our students are part of a family that supports their growth and holds them accountable.

A Positive Identity Many youths involved in knife crime lack a positive identity. At Fight Station, they gain a new one: martial artist, athlete, leader. These roles replace the harmful labels they might wear in the streets. They learn to earn respect through hard work and character, not fear.

Real Role Models, Real Change - Our coaches aren't just instructors — they're mentors. Many have seen the streets and chosen a different path. They use their experiences to guide others away from violence and toward self-mastery. We show our students that strength is not about dominance, but about control, humility, and knowing when to walk away.

From Fear to Empowerment - By turning fear into focus and aggression into achievement, kickboxing rewires the mindset. Instead of reacting with violence, our students respond with composure. Instead of carrying knives, they carry pride in their progress.

It's time to shift the culture. It's time to pick the gloves up and put the knives down. If you're a parent, guardian, or young person ready to take that first step toward a better future, Fight Station is here to help. Through sweat, support, and a strong sense of purpose, we change lives every day. Join us in the 'fight' for a safer, stronger, more empowered community.
