At Fight Station Kickboxing, we’re often approached by enthusiastic parents asking:
“Do you run family kickboxing classes where adults and kids can train together?”
It’s a fair question — on the surface, the idea sounds fantastic. Parents bonding with children, getting fitter together, and learning valuable skills as a team. But despite the appeal, there’s one simple reason we don’t offer them:
They’re not safe. They’re not effective. And they’re not in the best interest of either the adult or the child.
Let’s break down exactly why...
1. Safety First — Always
Kickboxing is a high-energy sport involving dynamic movements, strikes, and partner work. Adults hit harder, move faster, and weigh more — and even with the best intentions, accidents can happen.
When children train with other children, everything is scaled to suit their size, coordination, and stage of development. The same goes for adults.
Mix the two, and you’re introducing unnecessary risk. Even a gentle roundhouse from an adult can unintentionally cause injury to a child. We’re not in the business of taking that chance.
2. Different Ages. Different Needs. Different Focus.
Kids need structure, repetition, discipline — and lots of fun. Adults need technique, challenge, and a solid workout. Trying to merge those goals in one session often means everyone gets short-changed.
In reality, one of two things happens in a “family” class:
1. The adults feel like they’re just babysitting in sportswear
2. The children feel overwhelmed and lost in an adult-paced session
Neither is productive, and neither builds the long-term love of martial arts we’re here to inspire.
3. Family Time Isn’t Just About Sharing the Mat
We fully support families training in martial arts — but that doesn’t mean being in the same class. In fact, we see far better results when children and parents train in separate, age-appropriate sessions.
Here’s why:
Children build confidence training with peers in a tailored environment
Adults get their time to focus, de-stress, and train hard without needing to hold back
At home, families connect by sharing progress, practising combos, or cheering each other on
This creates a powerful dynamic where everyone wins — safely, confidently, and at the right level for them.
4. What We Recommend Instead
We offer separate, expertly structured sessions for children and adults. Each one is built to match the physical ability, emotional maturity, and personal goals of that age group.
🥋 Young People & Childrens Kickboxing – Confidence-building, anti-bullying, fitness and focus.
💪 Adult Kickboxing – Real technique, fitness, stress relief and self-defence.
You train. They train. You both grow — together, yet apart. It’s the best of both worlds.
5. Our Promise: Do What’s Right, Not What’s Easy
Could we fill a class with parents and kids side by side, swinging pads and calling it “family kickboxing”? Sure.
But that’s not our style.
We’re here to deliver world-class training with integrity. That means only offering classes that are safe, effective, and genuinely beneficial for everyone involved.
So while we love seeing families walk through our doors, you’ll find them training in separate classes, progressing at their own pace — and cheering each other on as they smash their goals.
